Interview with a Generation Y Expert - Lindsey Pollak

Bookmark and Share

Some agree and some disagree. I have read a lot comments that generations make online usually about the articles out there. On first impression and in my opinion. The older generations , Gen X and Boomers, usually agree with what is out there, but also don't comment as often as the younger generation. Gen Y seems to be very opinionated about the surge of articles written these days. Some agree and some are very defensive. Maybe rightly so.

It has been called "Dueling Age Groups" "Multi Generational workers" "Generational Issues" "Generational Bridges"

But that is not all, there are names for each Generation:
Baby Boomers - Hippies, Yuppies. Idealist

Generation X - Reactive

Generation Y - Millennial, Techies

One side of what is out there

They are entering the workforce, but we haven't left yet...so now what? How to work together?

Training needs to be pointed at the organization and just as much to Gen Y.

A generation that we raised?

High expectations of self: They aim to work faster and better than other workers.

High expectations of employers: They want fair and direct managers who are highly engaged in their professional development.

Ongoing learning: They seek out creative challenges and view colleagues as vast resources from whom to gain knowledge.

Immediate responsibility: They want to make an important impact on Day 1.

Goal-oriented: They want small goals with tight deadlines so they can build up ownership of tasks.

Are they really that different than us, doesn't one generation reflect the predecessors?
Or did we really have a hand in raising them, there was such a growth of advancing technology and changing times, this might have influenced them more than parenting itself?

A new way to think about diversity in the workplace

When we think of diversity in the workplace, we most frequently think of skin color, ethnicity, gender, religion or sometimes age... We don't often think of our generation as being a type of diversity, but it is. Generation is different than age in that our membership in a generation is based on common experiences - things we (as a group) experienced as our values and moral makeup were being formed. Recent research shows that there are linkages between what we experience throughout our career and how we view our relationship with our current employer - even how we view our employer's fulfillment of our expectations. These views of fulfillment are related to numerous outcomes - none the least of which include employee engagement and levels of trust.

Until organizations recognize and acknowledge that all employees do not view their treatment the same, there is going to be issues with these outcomes in the workplace. Recognition and acknowledgement are the first step. Education about the different views of the generations is the next. Once we all have a good understanding of each other, we can begin to build bridges between the generations. These bridges lead to organizational excellence - something every organization dreams of.

Who are these people

From a parents point of view. My daughters are in Generation Y, at least I think they are. I am now convinced the "Y" stands for "why". I know that is what I ask. Why are they texting, anyone and everyone what they had for lunch? Why does their underware cost as much as their shoes? Why do they change what they want every other day?

There is such a difference in the generation, I mean they are young, obviously there are going to be differences. With the tech age upon us and the time it takes for the world to change these days, you don't have a chance to catch up or catch your breath.

As a gen X, I eased into the computer world, cell phones evolved slowly and then boom! Faster and faster things change. The Gen Y can keep up, evolve quickly but how does this effect businesses.

Is it more harmful than good, the differences can be overwhelming. With each generation we have differences and we do have to work together on learning to survive with each other.

Why is it more confusing now than it was? We don't expect boomers to completely understand a Gen Y, but we have never expected an older generation to completely get a younger generation. That is how it has always been. It is like a right of passage, become a teen, and mess up your parents minds. So why is it so crazy now, maybe we are having a hard time keeping up with it all.

When it comes to the next generation entering the workplace, are we excited about the changes and getting prepared or we confused and arrogant about it?

Just some thoughts. Amber

Work life balance

To have work life balance may be just a myth, some people ask for it and wait for it. You actually have to make it happen and to understand what it means to you. You would think it would be easy to take time out for yourself, to relax after a days work, but it is even harder than it ever has been. You have to make a conscious effort to bring work life balance into your life.

Just the statement itself "Work-Life" like they are separate from each other. Most people work and it is part of life. Accepting your life as a whole and doing what you have to do and what you enjoy to do, should not have such a difference in meaning. Maybe we try to hard to understand.

Talking to people you know, or even people you don't, find out how they juggle their lives. Knowing you are not the only one who feels the need to search for balance, can help you understand where you are at.

Find your own stress relief, there may be many suggestions on how to relieve stress, but you are the only one that really knows what works for you. Some may sit quietly reading a good book, others may need to turn the music real loud and dance around the house.

Maybe you already have work life balance and do not even know it, you might need to find an appreciation of what you have, grow on what is working and tweak what is not.
